VIDEO! Off-duty Guardia Civil officers save mum and puppy from certain death in Murcia canal
The pair are now in the care of animal rescuer Martina Díaz, who is asking the public to help choose their names and follow their recovery
A mother dog and her young puppy are safe today thanks to the actions of two off-duty Guardia Civil officers and a local animal rescuer who has promised to help them find the loving future they deserve.
The pair were discovered near an irrigation canal in a village in Murcia after a couple heard what sounded like puppies crying nearby. When they went to investigate, they found a heartbreaking scene.
The mother dog had been left in the canal, with a brick tied around her neck. Alongside her was her puppy, a little boy estimated to be around three and a half months old.
The couple who found them, Alejandro and Andrea, are both Guardia Civil officers. Although off duty at the time, they immediately stepped in to help and managed to pull the animals to safety.
The Guardia Civil later shared details of the rescue on social media, explaining that the dog had been found tied up and in danger of drowning any second. An investigation has now been opened to establish who was responsible.
The mother and son have since been taken into the care of well-known animal rescuer Martina Díaz, who has dedicated her life to helping abandoned and unwanted dogs across the Region of Murcia and beyond.
Sharing an update after welcoming them, Martina said, "Today we welcomed this mum and her puppy, two lives that someone tried to take in the cruellest possible way."
"Thankfully, their cries were heard by a wonderful couple who did not hesitate for a second to help. They pulled them out of there and literally saved their lives."
Martina also revealed that the officers were deeply affected by what they had witnessed.
"This couple are members of the Guardia Civil, but beyond the uniform, today they showed an enormous heart and an undeniable love for animals," she said.
"They left in tears when they placed them in our care, but we promised them that this will only be a temporary stop for them. I will do everything in my power to find them the very best family."
The mother is believed to be around two years old and both dogs are now receiving the care they need, including veterinary checks, vaccinations and everything required to prepare them for eventual adoption.
Despite what they have been through, Martina says they are already showing just how special they are.
"They are absolutely beautiful and, after everything they have been through, they deserve to start a new life surrounded by love and safety," she said.
For now, the pair are being looked after in a village in Murcia where they can begin to recover from their ordeal.
Martina is also asking animal lovers for help with something a little happier. The mum and her puppy have not yet been named, and she is inviting people to suggest names and follow their progress through her Facebook page.
As one chapter closes and another begins, there is now hope that these two survivors will soon find the safe and loving home they were so nearly denied.
