Three boats abandoned in the Mar Menor as illegal activities surge
Mar Menor coastal authorities are taking a much tougher line this summer against activity that could damage the lagoon
Illegal boat parties and anchoring in protected areas of the Mar Menor have always been a problem, but the issue is escalating this summer. The coastal authorities have promised locals and businesses they'll take a tougher approach with lawbreakers after handling hundreds of complaints already.
Just this week, the Guardia Civil has discovered three abandoned boats in the Mar Menor waters and is proposing fines for their owners under maritime law.
Abandoned vessels like these pose serious risks to the sensitive lagoon ecosystem and other water users. Without proper maintenance and supervision, these boats can leak fuel, oils and other hazardous substances directly into the water, causing even more pollution that threatens marine life and water quality in the already fragile Mar Menor.
The boats also create safety hazards for other vessels and swimmers. When left without proper lighting, marking systems or steering control, they become floating obstacles that can cause collisions or accidents. Drifting boats can strike other vessels, damage coastal infrastructure or injure people swimming or diving in the area.The environmental damage is particularly concerning in the Mar Menor, where the enclosed lagoon system makes it difficult for pollutants to disperse naturally. Any fuel or oil spills from abandoned boats can have long-lasting effects on the delicate ecosystem.
Throughout the summer, the authorities will increase patrols along the Murcia coast to protect the ecosystem, prevent illegal fishing and docking and ensure safety for swimmers and those working in the marine environment.
