June 21 and 22 Tapas Route in Isla Plana, La Azohía and Campillo de Adentro
A mouth-watering visit to one of the most picturesque beach settings in Murcia over midsummer weekend!
The Town Hall of Cartagena certainly seem to be attempting to save face after the failure to allow beach bars to open at the usual time of year this spring in Isla Plana and La Azohía, and having issued a press release outlining the amounts spent on new waste paper bins, upgraded lifeguard points and plastic seating (among other things) earlier this week, and repainting the white lines along the main road on Tuesday (although not actually repairing the road surface), they are now supporting the first ever official Tapas Route in Isla Plana, La Azohía and Campillo de Adentro.
It certainly is a mouth-watering prospect as 12 local hostelries compete to win the award for the tastiest tapa at a price of 4 euros including a drink! All of these bars and restaurants are well-known to both locals and the flocks of visitors arriving at the beaches over the weekend of midsummer, and this is an excellent opportunity to make the most of what looks like being another hot and sunny weekend at the beaches of the eastern side of the Bay of Mazarrón!
The event takes place only on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd June, so anyone hoping to sample all 12 dishes will certainly need to work up a hunger before setting out to cast their vote for one of the following establishments:
Freiduría Pescadería Isla Plana - fried fish platter (12.00 to 13.00 only)
Terraza del Mar (the social club opposite the church in Isla Plana) – a traditional marinera but with smoked salmon replacing the anchovy on top of Russian salad and a round breadstick
El Ancla (Isla Plana) – smoked sardine, Mazarrón tomato, chilli peppers and black salt on lightly toasted bread
La Zagalica (Isla Plana) – “zaranga” of local produce
Restaurante Acuario (at the entrance to La Azohía) – Delicious battered cod balls (open only until 17.00)
Restaurante Villamares (opposite the beach of San Ginés in La Azohía) – goat cheese “ferrero rocher with cream cheese (12.00 to 13.30)
Ferris Vistabella (La Azohía) – battered cod with caramelized onion (not available 14.00 to 16.30)
León Restaurante (La Azohía) – waffle with octopus and sweet potato
La Bodega Molina (La Azohía) – cod with bittersweet tomato and raisins (12.00 to 13.30)
Rivemar Bar (La Azohía) - Argentinian chicken pasty
La Azohía Restaurante y Bar (La Azohía) – La Azohía tuna with garlic, cheese and caramelized peppers
Cantina de Campillo de Adentro – artichokes and crispy ham
Route maps are available at all 12 venues, and once you have tried 6 tapas (and got your route map stamped appropriately) you can cast your vote for your favourite, leaving the map at any of the bar/restaurants.
Happy eating this weekend in Isla Plana and La Azohía!!
