British tourist drowns during evening swim in Fuengirola
The 57-year-old was pulled from the sea by beachgoers but could not be revived
A 57-year-old British tourist has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in the sea off Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol.
The man is believed to have entered the water alone for an evening swim on Wednesday May 21. Witnesses said he was around 60 metres from shore when he began to struggle and called for help.
Two members of the public managed to pull him from the water and immediately alerted emergency services. Paramedics arrived quickly at the scene, near the beachfront restaurant Chiringuito Martin Playa, but were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at the beach just after 9.20pm.
A spokesperson for the regional emergency coordination centre said, “Two members of the public were able to get the man out of the water but despite the efforts of the emergency responders to save his life, there was nothing they could do to revive him.”
Police later confirmed that the man was a British national who had been staying at a nearby hotel.
The tragedy comes just two days after another British holidaymaker lost her life in Spain. A 39-year-old woman died on Monday May 19 after falling from a lookout point in Palma, Mallorca. She is believed to have plunged around 60 feet from the Mirador de es Jonquet, a popular coastal viewpoint. She was taken to hospital in a critical condition, and later sadly passed away.
