Seven Blue Flag beaches in Andalucía where you can actually find space this summer
From Atlantic dunes to inland reservoirs, these quieter spots combine quality facilities with room to breathe
Summer in Andalucía is wonderful, but finding a beach that doesn't feel like a car park by 10.00am is another matter. The good news is that they do exist, and several of them carry the Blue Flag, the internationally recognised environmental award that guarantees clean water, good facilities and proper safety standards throughout the season. Here are seven worth seeking out, listed from east to west and inland.
Santa Pura, Lepe (Huelva)
Bordering a protected area of dunes and marshes, Santa Pura has a wilder feel than most. At low tide the shoreline expands considerably, and a short walk from the beach bar at the entrance is usually enough to leave the noise behind entirely. Genuinely peaceful, even in August.
Punta Candor, Rota (Cádiz)
Behind this wide Atlantic beach lies a pine forest and a natural dune system, accessible via wooden walkways that keep the environment intact. The sand is fine, the space generous, and a constant Atlantic breeze makes the hottest hours genuinely bearable. There's a beach bar, showers and restrooms, but the beach is large enough that you can always find your own corner.
El Chaparral, Mijas (Málaga)
On the Costa del Sol, a genuinely relaxed beach is something of a rarity, but El Chaparral earns it. Pine-covered hills screen it from the road and larger developments, and a mix of sandy stretches and rocky sections makes it popular with snorkellers as well as swimmers. Lifeguards are on duty throughout summer.
Carchuna, Motril (Granada)
The Granada coast is known for small coves that fill up fast, but Carchuna breaks that pattern. Three kilometres of straight shoreline with dark sand and pebbles means bathers spread out naturally, even at weekends. Free parking, showers and a lifeguard station make it an easy, unfussy choice.
Los Nardos, Pulpí (Almería)
Almost on the border with Murcia, this 500-metre stretch is well preserved and refreshingly uncommercialised. The mix of sand, small stones and rocks keeps the water exceptionally clear. Even in peak weeks it rarely feels overwhelming, which around here is saying something.
El Encinarejo, Andújar (Jaén)
Not all Blue Flags fly by the sea. This freshwater bathing area sits alongside the Jándula River deep in the Sierra de Andújar, with natural woodland shade and lifeguards on duty in summer. A lovely, cooler alternative if the coast feels too far or too frantic.
La Breña, Almodóvar del Río (Córdoba)
Close to Córdoba city, the La Breña II reservoir offers around 140 metres of designated bathing shoreline, with fixed umbrellas, pontoons, showers and a beach bar. The water is calm and very clean, making it ideal for families with younger children. Paddle surfing and small boat hire are also on offer nearby.
None of these places will stay secret forever, but for now they represent some of the best value for effort in Andalucía this summer. Clean water, decent facilities and a little breathing room. Sometimes that's all you need.
