San Javier Airport's forgotten planes up for auction
A Cessna Skyhawk and Piper Navajo, abandoned for years at San Javier Airport, are now being offered at auction by Aena
A rare opportunity is up for grabs at San Javier Airport but it is also a bittersweet reminder of the former glory days of the much-loved airport. Once a busy and very handy airport connecting the Mar Menor area to the rest of the world, the airport has been quiet since the commercial flights moved to Corvera Airport in 2019.
There are exciting projects planned for the site, like the aerospace technology hub and the Mar Menor Species Recovery Centre (Observatorio del Mar Menor), but many still fondly remember the airport in its heyday.
Now, Aena has announced a public auction for two aircraft left in a state of legal abandonment at the former civil airport. The lot includes a Cessna F172M Skyhawk, a single-engine four-seater and the most produced plane in history, valued at €6,051.60, and a Piper PA‑31 Navajo, a twin-engine model popular in the 1970s, appraised at €39,009.08.
The auction for the combined lot starts at €22,530.34, and participants must deposit €1,126.52 to take part.
The auction was first announced on September 17, 2025 with the official notice published recently in the Boletín Oficial del Estado. Anyone interested has to meet the requirements outlined in the BOE, and offers will be opened at Aena’s central offices. San Javier Airport is still a military base and waiting for the planned projects to bring some new life to the site. In the meantime, these two long-forgotten planes are up for grabs, probably not ready to fly again, but useful for parts, restoration projects, or just as a reminder of San Javier Airport’s history.
