Refugio del Viento, Animal Shelter and Rescue,Totana
Shelter from the wind, is giving a lifeline to animals
At Refugio del Viento, Totana, they are saving the lives of countless animals, predominantly dogs and cats, who would otherwise have a very slim chance of survival due to various sad circumstances.
They rely heavily on support from the public, volunteers and helpers, who assist them in their constant battle in local animal rescue.
If you feel you could assist, please email Sharon for further details.

Animals are rescued and cared for in Totana
Refugio del Viento (Shelter from the Wind) is run entirely by volunteers, headed by the President Silvia Escribano Abellón. They take dogs from kill stations, those injured in traffic accidents, mal-treated and abandoned on the streets and also those that are handed in by owners due to changes in circumstances, and endeavour to find homes for them.
In 2009 the idea to help save countless dogs in kill stations, abandoned on the streets and in the countryside, became a reality. It wasn’t easy to find a suitable place where they could take them to and give care and medical assistance but, with all hands on deck, an abandoned house was found with some land, and a virtual ruin was converted into a place suitable for a shelter.
Within five years the shelter just wasn’t big enough to cope with the animals being rescued. In 2014, a massive fund raising campaign was started and thanks to people’s kindness by way of very generous donations, land was found and they started to build the NEW Shelter from the Wind, Refugio del Viento, in Totana. All the runs have concrete floors, sun shades and their own little houses. Males live with females in harmony. There is also enough land for them to run around, which they love to do.
Of course it isn’t home, but it is as good as it gets for homeless dogs, till they get adopted, and finally find their forever home, with their human family.
They are always looking for volunteers to help with the many different needs of the shelter. If you have the time, you can help with cleaning, dog walks, fostering, support in organising fairs, events, markets, taking animals to the vet and returning to the shelter, collection of donations etc. Email Sharon Kaye for more information.
