Playa Centro / Platja Centre, Guardamar del Segura
The most urban of the beaches in Guardamar is extremely popular in summer
This part of the 11-kilometre coastline in Guardamar del Segura is right next to the town centre, and is the most popular in summer among sunseekers and bathers. Access is easy on foot from almost anywhere in the centre.
As the most central of all the beaches in Guardamar it is also one of the most fully equipped, with safe access for those of limited mobility, four lifeguard lookout points, foot showers, a beach bar, sunshades for hire, a Red Cross hut and children’s play areas on the sand. All of these facilities and the daily beach cleaning have earned the Playa Centro the coveted Blue Flag award for quality services.
The attractive promenade behind the beach is lined with apartment blocks, and on the ground floor the commercial premises are occupied by various bars, restaurants and small shops: this is definitely a place where a day at the beach can include a midday snack or a Menú del Día without having to walk too far in the midday sun.
Parking, for those coming to Guardamar from elsewhere, can be a slight problem, especially in the height of summer on market day (Wednesday), and although there are plenty of spaces on the Avenida de Europa and neighbouring streets you may need to get there early in order to find one which isn’t occupied. All parking in this area is on meters, so be sure to take some change!
As with all of the beaches in Guardamar del Segura, the Playa Centro is not separated from the neighbouring beaches by any geographical accident such as headlands or cliffs. The only noticeable feature which marks it out from Playa Babilonia to the north and Playa de la Roqueta to the south is man-made: the pedestrian Paseo Marítimo runs along this 427-metre stretch of the shore, and the area is a hive of activity both in summer and, although to a lesser degree, throughout the rest of the year.
In short, the Playa Centro boasts the same clear water and fine sand as the rest of the coastline in the municipality of Guardamar del Segura. It is differentiated from other beaches by its central location, as a result of which it is served by a variety of hostelries and is the best equipped, and an afternoon here is a good way to round off a morning investigating the history and museums of Guardamar.
