May 29 to 31 Medieval market in Archena
Spectacle, traditional crafts, historical reenactments and plenty to eat in this picturesque town on the banks of the River Segura
The spa town of Archena, alongside a gorgeously lush, green series of bends in the River Segura, is hosting a grand medieval market over the last weekend in May, with three days of arts and crafts, shows, workshops, activities and tasty culinary offerings for all the family.
For the duration of the event the Plaza Primero de Mayo and adjacent streets will travel back in time to the Middle Ages as Mercados Arlekin bring their special brand of event to the town, with the fun and activity lasting from 11.00 to 21.00 on each of the days. One of the most popular areas is likely to be the one devoted to arts and crafts, where wood and leather workers sit alongside others specializing in ceramics, pottery, jewellery and, of course, foodstuffs – a very different shopping trip from the one to your nearest supermarket or mall!
The taverns will be replete with roasts, meat products and traditional sweet dishes, with the smell of embers wafting across the market as food becomes one of the main elements of the market.
Among the entertainment are musical parades, street theatre, fire-wielding showmen, historical re-enactments and costume competitions, while children’s workshops are provided to ensure that there really is something for all ages to enjoy.
And of course, if you want to make a weekend of it, you can book into the superb spa resort on the banks of the river, where people have been seeking treatment for a variety of ailments since Roman times as well as, in the modern era, a serious session of pampering and relaxation!

What is Montessori?
The Montessori method departs from traditional teaching practices by placing the child’s interests, capacity to choose and natural abilities at the heart of the learning environment, rather than focusing on fitting all students into rigid, one-size-fits-all boxes.“CHARACTER CANNOT BE TAUGHT, AS IT COMES FROM EXPERIENCE, NOT FROM EXPLANATION.”
