May 16 Guided tour of medieval Moratalla
The intimate atmosphere of this old fortress town in northern Murcia harks back to the Middle Ages
The town of Moratalla in north-west Murcia has an atmospheric and complete old quarter with winding streets clustered around the foot of the castle and plenty of noble homes which used to belong to local landowners, dating back first to the times when Moorish invaders built castles and watchtowers in the area and then when the Christian armies of the Reconquista took control.
These medieval roots are complemented by the baroque churches of the Convento de San Francisco and the Iglesia de la Asunción, all of them creating an intimate small-town atmosphere which you can enjoy on this guided tour on Saturday 16th May.
The tour is being held in Spanish and starts at 11.00 outside the Town Hall, visiting sights such as the churches of San Franciso and Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the exterior of the castle, the Museo de la Soledad (which is devoted to the Semana Santa drumming tradition) and the local theatre. Finishing at around 13.00, the visit leaves you plenty of time for a spot of lunch in a local hostelry!
Registration is available online here at just 5 euros per person (free of charge for accompanying children aged 6 and under). Participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing and footwear (Moratalla is a hilly town!).
Further information is available from the local tourist office at turismo@ayuntamientomoratalla.net.
