Jumilla Wine Route, Bodegas Sierra Norte
The speciality of the Bodegas Sierra Norte winery in Jumilla is the Equilibrio label
Bodegas Sierra Norte is a wine producing concern with wineries in many parts of Spain, and the one in Jumilla is home to the Equilibrio label, made mostly with the Monastrell grapes upon which the sector in the north of the Region of Murcia is heavily dependent.
The wines produced by Bodegas Sierra Norte tend to be young, unoaked, barrel-aged and made from single varieties of grape, and all products are fully organic.
The vineyards in Jumilla are at Paraje la Raja and Casa del Olmo at an altitude of around 600 metres above sea level, where winters are cold, summers are hot and dry and rainfall is very low. Vines are over 20 years old on average, and are grown as traditional trellised bush vines.
The density is 1,600 vines per hectare, and alongside Syrah grapes are grown at a density of 2,700 vines per hectare. Manual harvesting of the Monastrell with special bunch selection brings acidity, structure and vivacity, while the Syrah grapes are picked by mechanical harvesters.
The result is a wine with a deep cherry-red colour, aromas of berry and black fruit, while the wine’s lively acidity brings magnificent balance. Excellent with charcuterie, grilled white meats, stews served with rice and or semi-cured cheese.
Other wines produced from Jumilla vines include an Equilibrio Sauvignon Blanc, a 100% Monastrell Equilibrio Organic 4 months and an Equilibrio 9 months.
The winery is located in the south of Jumilla, on the MU-A-16 road which leads from the Murcia-Jumilla motorway to Cañada del Trigo and inland Alicante. Click for map.
