July 19 Guided tour of the Roman villa of Los Villaricos in Mula
Los Villaricos in Mula was an important agricultural villa almost 2000 years ago
On Saturday 19th July the tourist office of Mula is offering a free guided tour of the Roman villa site of Los Villaricos, which contains one of the best preserved agricultural villas from the Roman province of Hispania.
The first indications of occupancy at Los Villaricos date from the second half of the 1st century AD , when there was a significant increase in the number of agricultural villas in the area, and after more than a century the villa was totally modified. The new layout was the one which is visible today, and includes thermal baths, a large water cistern, an olive press and mosaic flooring.
By the late 5th and early 6th century activity here was on the wane, and later additions include an improvised cemetery
The one-hour tour starts at 20.00 at the site itself, which is outside the town near the motorway exit on the Carretera del Embalse de la Cierva. From the RM-15, take the turning for Mula and go immediately right at the roundabout, the Roman Villa site is just a short distance up the lane and the covered structures can be seen from the motorway.
The cost is just 4 euros (2 euros for young children) and prior booking is required online here.
This tour is given in Spanish, but English-speaking guides are available for advance group bookings: to reserve contact the tourist office in person, by telephone on 968 661501 or by using the safe contact box on the tourist office link below.
