El Mojón lies on the border between the municipalities of San Pedro del Pinatar, in the Region of Murcia, and Pilar de la Horadada in Alicante.
One of the earliest documented references to the area comes from the year 1304, when the frontier between the rival kingdoms of Castile and Aragón was established running across the Campo de Cartagena and ending in the village of El Pinatar. To show the frontier a marker bar ( a mojón) was set into an outcrop in the sea, which from then on was known as “El Mojón” and gave its name to the area.
El Mojón celebrates its annual fiestas in honour of San Roque, which include a number of musical open air events and various activities for the locals to enjoy.
The core act of the Fiesta is a procession with the image of the saint, which takes place on the 16th August, carried on the shoulders of local residents with the accompaniment of the band, la banda de cornetas y tambores del Cristo del Perdón, through the streets of the pedanía.
The procession leaves from the neighbours association and concludes at the paseo maritime by the beach, where a country mass is celebrated.
