Churches in Guardamar del Segura
The main church of Guardamar was rebuilt after the Torrevieja earthquake in 1829
The main parish church of Guardamar del Segura is dedicated to San Jaime Apóstol (or Sant Jaume, in the local language of Valenciano), and is located opposite the Town Hall in the Plaza de la Constitución.
The building was designed by Larramendias as part of his reconstruction of the town of Guardamar after the Torrevieja earthquake in 1829, and is neo-classical in style. The most striking feature is without a doubt the high tower over the main door.
Construction of the church did not begin until 1845, and lasted on and off until 1910. In the 1960s the bell-tower was extended and the exterior of the building was plastered over, concealing the original stonework.
The church contains some items rescued from the previous building, such as paintings, gold and silverwork and sculpted images of San Jaime Peregrino and Nuestra Señora del Rosario. Alongside these are other images created in the mid-twentieth century, but unfortunately the church is not normally open to visitors.
Among the other places of worship in Guardamar del Segura is the church devoted to Santa María del Mar, where Mass is held only during the summer months. This church is close to the Playa de la Roqueta at the southern end of the town centre, just beach-side of the Avenida de Cervantes, on the corner formed by Calle Nicaragua and Calle Filipinas.
Out of town on the CV-895 road towards Los Montesinos is the Ermita (small church) dedicated to Nuestra Señora de Fátima, which is used all year round. An open-air auditorium behind the church is used for concerts and other events.
In addition a small chapel exists in the Pinomar development at the southern end of the municipality.
Mass times at the churches of Guardamar del Segura are as follows:
