Cabo de Palos seafront to get safer, greener walking route to the lighthouse

Cartagena plans €200,000 makeover to link the fish market with the Paseo de las Calas

Cartagena Ayuntamiento is set to transform the popular seaside path in Cabo de Palos, replacing the informal car park in front of the fish market with a safer, more attractive pedestrian route. Around €200,000 from the State Secretariat for Tourism’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan will be used to rehabilitate the so‑called Blue Trail, which runs along the coastal edge from the port entrance towards the lighthouse.

The project focuses on a 4,268.65-square-metre stretch starting on Miguel Salas Street and covering four distinct sections: the area in front of the fish market (Lonja), the beginning of the Paseo de las Calas, Pasaje Acantilado and the natural path that leads up to the lighthouse. At present, much of this route is badly worn, with eroded dirt tracks, cracked concrete and a wooden fence in poor condition due to heavy foot traffic and constant exposure to the elements.

One of the main changes will be the removal of uncontrolled vehicle parking in front of the fish market to free up space for a proper pedestrian connection with the Paseo de las Calas. The plan also includes repairing pavements, stabilising the most eroded sections, especially on the earth paths, and widening narrow sidewalks and pinch points so that people of all ages and abilities can move along the route comfortably.

As part of the upgrade, damaged fences and safety barriers will be replaced with more durable materials that can withstand the marine environment and blend into the landscape. New shaded areas will be created at key spots and native plants will be added to improve both comfort and the visual appeal of this scenic coastal walk.

According to the municipal project, there is currently no continuous accessible pedestrian route linking the Levante Beach Promenade with the area around La Bocana del Puerto. This gap limits how residents and visitors can enjoy the coastline. Municipal technicians therefore propose consolidating and adapting the Blue Trail with universal accessibility and careful landscape treatment, so that this natural enclave can be fully recovered “for the use and enjoyment of residents, visitors and tourists.”

The works, which will run up to the first esplanade and viewpoint on the route, are scheduled to take three months to complete. Companies interested in carrying out the project can submit their bids until Monday March 30.
