Cabo de Palos lighthouse makeover begins with new viewpoints and improved access
Major €467,000 project aims to make one of Murcia’s most iconic coastal spots safer, greener and easier to enjoy
Work has officially begun to transform the area around the Cabo de Palos lighthouse, with a €467,000 investment set to improve access, safety and the overall visitor experience at one of the most recognisable on the Murcia coastline.The project, led by the Cartagena Port Authority in collaboration with the local Ayuntamiento and residents, is expected to take around five months to complete. It forms part of a wider plan to better connect port areas with the surrounding community while protecting the natural and cultural heritage of the site.
At the heart of the upgrade is a full reconstruction of the lighthouse access staircase, which will be brought up to modern standards using materials designed to blend into the landscape, including limestone and treated wood. A new pedestrian safety barrier will also be installed, along with an intermediate viewpoint featuring benches, giving visitors a more comfortable place to stop and take in the sea views.
Pedro Pablo Hernández, president of the Cartagena Port Authority, said: “We are working on one of the most recognisable spots on our coastline with the aim of improving its accessibility and safety, while preserving its scenic and heritage value.”
Further improvements include resurfacing the surrounding road and esplanade, restoring protective stone walls and replacing older drainage systems with new anti-corrosion materials suited to the marine environment. Updated lighting and telecommunications infrastructure will also be added, designed to be both discreet and durable.
Environmental considerations are a key part of the project. Plans include planting native species, removing invasive vegetation and creating new rest areas and viewpoints to encourage responsible use of the landscape. As Hernández explained, “We continue to advance in a port model that combines development, environmental protection and quality of life.”
The works build on earlier plans to create a safer and more environmentally friendly walking route along the seafront leading to the lighthouse.
The lighthouse itself remains one of the most important landmarks in the area, both for its coastal views and its historical significance.
It was also granted maximum heritage protection status, underlining its cultural importance and the need to carefully manage any changes to the site.
Perched at the edge of the headland, the Cabo de Palos lighthouse has long been a focal point for visitors exploring the coastline and surrounding natural areas.
Once complete, the upgrades are expected to make the area more accessible and enjoyable for both residents and visitors, while preserving the character that makes Cabo de Palos such a special place.
