April 12 Free guided walk on the Cocedores Blue Trail in Águilas
A chance to learn about history and local wildlife on the fascinating coastline of Águilas
The "Los Cocedores" Blue Trail in Águilas takes its name from the numerous pools in which esparto Grass was tried and treated prior to weaving in times gone by. These were known as “cocedores” (literally cookers!) and played an important part in an industry which was vital to the local economy for hundreds of years, giving the material its distinctive colour and texture.
Once dried, the grass was cut into finer strips before use, and in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and along this coastal route there are many locations where the drying and salting pools can be seen. Other features include the native flora and fauna and three machine gun nests which were built alongside the beaches and coves during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), two alongside the Playa Matalentisco and one at Calarreona.
This guided walk, which is held in Spanish, begins at 9.30 alongside the “Sendero Azul Los Cocedores” information panel at the end of the Paseo Marítimo de Poniente and continues to the viewing point of Calarreona before returning to the starting point (click here for map).

Águilas boasts 28 kilometres of coastline, with many fine, sandy beaches, sheltered coves and unspoilt natural beaches. It is a great summer favourite with Spanish holidaymakers, so always has a superb programme of concerts and activities throughout the summer, as well as the biggest carnival in the Region of Murcia, 40 days before Semana Santa (Easter.)
Throughout the year it also has a number of museums and historical attractions, a castle with fabulous views overlooking the bay and several other points of interest, all of which make it an good place to visit for days out. Throughout the year the tourist office runs monthly guided tours and the route of the railways, which explores the railway history of the town.
The tourist information office is located in the Plaza de Antonio Cortijos, just a short walk from the sea front and Plaza de España, a cool, shaded space in which to enjoy a coffee.
