More than 20 years in the making: Spanish Navy celebrates launch of S-82 submarine Narciso Monturiol in Cartagena
A landmark moment for Spanish naval power and local industry as the next-gen submarine prepares for rigorous sea trials
The Navantia shipyard in Cartagena was buzzing last Friday as the spectacular launch ceremony took place for the S-82 submarine, proudly named Narciso Monturiol. This marks the second vessel in Spain’s pioneering S-80 series, a state-of-the-art non-nuclear attack submarine that is set to become a key asset for the Navy and a symbol of national pride.Gonzalo Mateo, Navantia’s Director of Operations and Business, summed up the achievement perfectly: “The road has not been easy, but thanks to trust and collaboration, this incredible submarine will soon join its sister ship Isaac Peral, showing off its magnificent capabilities alongside our excellent Navy.”
Admiral Aniceto Rosique praised the dedication that pushed the project through delays since 2004, pointing out that the Narciso Monturiol faces a daunting schedule: around 500 tests in port and another 200 at sea to prove its mettle. Thanks to insights gained from its predecessor, the S-81 Isaac Peral, this process will be faster but no less thorough.
Defense Minister Margarita Robles expressed pride in what the submarine represents. “This program showcases a great Spain - our Navy, industry, Cartagena, and Murcia. We must feel proud,” she declared. She also highlighted the indispensable role played by Navantia and the more than 150 companies involved, many local, and gave heartfelt thanks to the shipyard workers whose dedication echoed through the ceremony.
Commander Damián Niebla, representing the crew, echoed this spirit of resilience: “We will fight, maintain the initiative, and live up to the enormous responsibility and expectations placed on us by the Navy and our country.”
The Secretary of State for Defense, Amparo Valcarce, noted that the S-80 project not only strengthens Spain’s maritime security but also boosts its international reputation in defence technology, with over €4 billion invested through 2032, supporting more than 6,000 jobs and making a substantial economic impact.
At 80.8 metres long and 7.3 metres wide, the S-82 weighs around 3,000 tonnes submerged. It features revolutionary technology including an anaerobic propulsion system allowing it to stay hidden underwater for weeks; a game changer in stealth and autonomy.
The ceremonial christening, highlighted by the breaking of the traditional bottle by Isabel López, wife of the Chief of Defense Staff, was followed by the national anthem, marking this momentous occasion. The Narciso Monturiol is now propelled towards harbour and sea trials, setting its course toward full operational readiness expected in 2026.This launch is not just about a submarine; it’s a triumphant story of innovation, regional pride, and national defence that continues Spain’s rise as a maritime leader in Europe.
